Many style statements and new trends came up in the decades of 70’s and 80’s. The experiments done in designs impressed millions in those days. Styles changed rapidly in those years. MTV, which came out on the scene then, changed fashion, music and many other things. During these years people have tried to redefine and have adapted to sudden changes among both the women and men.

In the decade of 70’s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women once wore bold dresses having shoulder pads and men used shirts in full sleeves that were stitched in expensive material together with loose fitting baggy trousers that were slightly tapered at the ankle. Former punks introduced the Romantic Movement with designer clothes. Designer jeans and “leather in clothing” also began to emerge as hot trends which soon caught up.

Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes that were transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. Jogging pants and tracksuits became popular leisure wear. Rock bands solemnized acid washed faded jeans, denim jackets together with piercing and tattooing as the fashion statement of the era. Men started to use flashy earrings. Hairstyles also took rapid strides and included lots of mousse that gave the impact of a shiny convoluted look. The teenagers had a fancy for crimped hair with streaks of contrasting colour. The whole trend of hair was reversed as men had long hair while women had short hair.

The precious gems studded jewellery was regarded as synonymous with status. It represented power and wealth. Women wore long odd earrings which at times did not match each other. They often even used single earrings. Chains made of gold and silver, punk style and bright colors in jewellery arrived to fashion. Shape of the jewellery changed significantly. Men began to wear digital watches with metal bands but afterwards reverted to dialed watches. Kids popularized colorful plastic-type watches. Roman numeral adorned the dials of watches. The Movado design was a status symbol featuring a sleek design and a dot at 12. Sometimes people also used several watches on a single wrist along with hoop earrings and gold bracelets.

Designer bags manufactured from leather were also one of several trend setters. Clutch bags captivated interest amongst people for being so firm and appressed. Stylish briefcases also sold very well. It was customary for women to match their footwear colour to their bags. Shawls in different designs and colors became a favorite of the women. These shawls could be worn with tops in the day and gowns in the evenings. Designer underwear made waves in this period. Women used light colored, laced underwear. Men preferred bright colored boxer shorts. Small eye-glasses with metal frames became a rage in these days. However round and small glasses stayed popular in the entire 80’s. Fashion had heavy influence on everyday living of those years.
