There are four main problems with most creative writing courses:
? they typically cost a heap of cash
? they don't seem to be very flexible - you've got to study set topics once they tell you to
? a number of them have a high drop-out rate - they put you off writing after they should be supporting and encouraging you
? some of them can take a year or 2 of intensive study, when most people would well be obtaining on with some real writing, and maybe making some money from it
We tend to every have completely different ways that of learning, therefore what suits me would possibly not suit you. However here's what I would do if I was starting from scratch nowadays:
(1) I would start by signing up for a local artistic writing category for beginners - in all probability a night course at a school or college. These are sometimes short courses, cheap, and the proper introduction to the subject.
(two) Then I might scan 'The Creative Writing Coursebook' by Julia Bell and Paul Magrs, and do all the exercises in it (that is terribly important).
This book is based on the Artistic Writing course run by the University of East Anglia in the UK. Many well-known writers began their careers there, and it's an excellent reputation. For those of us who are unable to attend the real course, this is often the next best factor - and abundant cheaper!
It is a huge book with heaps of exercises, so while this may not be the fastest possibility, it's a thorough one. But you'll be able to work at your own pace; you'll be able to skip the elements that don't interest or apply to you; and you can work on your own writing projects whereas you're learning.
(three) Next, I would hunt for an intermediate/advanced creative writing category in my native area, or maybe in the nearest town, just to shine up my skills and meet folks once more when all that book learning.
(four) My next step would be to submit a piece of writing to a professional editor or critique service (they advertise in all the writing magazines). This might show me where my weaknesses were - plotting, characterisation, description, or whatever it might be.
Another sensible option would be to enter some writing competitions that provide detailed feedback on each entry. I would send the identical piece of writing to every of them, as a result of the judges might have completely different opinions. This would be cheaper than a professional critique, but it might take much longer to receive the feedback. When all the responses had been came I would look through them to see what the judges agreed were my weak points.
(five) I would then rummage around for a course that coated those specific drawback areas, or realize some books on those topics - again making certain I did all the exercises in them to get the total benefit.
(half dozen) With those topics mastered, and my former weaknesses become strengths, I would submit another commentary for skilled review, or enter it for some competitions, to find out whether it absolutely was now up to straightforward or if I required any tuition.
(seven) I might repeat this process until:
? the feedback said my work was of a skilled commonplace in all aspects
? or I won a notable competition, or a minimum of a handful of smaller ones
? or I started obtaining published frequently
? or I ended learning anything new
Once I reached that time, I would recognize it had been time to prevent learning and start writing for real.
Whatever you are doing, don't simply dive in and start writing while not taking the time to be told how it works. I made that mistake at the beginning of my career, and wasted three entire years. Take some time to find out the basics: a way to structure a story properly; how to create your characters and plots realistic; how to form drama and tension; the way to vary the pace; when to change viewpoints and when to not; the correct means to line out a manuscript and submit it for publication; what editors, agents and publishers are looking for; and thus on.
There's a heap to find out, but it ought to be enormous fun. And there will continuously be other individuals at the identical stage as you who would welcome a replacement friend to share their ideas and issues with. Perhaps you could form a tiny writing group with a number of the other students from the classes you took.
If you are looking for some friendly fellow writers to speak things over with, attempt the ideas4writers Facebook cluster - it's totally free, and open to everyone.
