Chefs who work in catering are commonly expected to create dishes in kitchens that are make shift, at a range of different venues. Sometimes, this means preparing food in the great outdoors. This is often difficult work for numerous chefs. Still, for those chefs who enjoy working in a challenging environment, finding a chef catering job can be an interesting and rewarding experience.

There are many challenges in working a chef catering job. The work is hard, since it often means making multiple different kinds of meals at the same time for a variety of events, ranging from conferences to birthdays to weddings. While a chef's roles in a restaurant kitchen is similar in a catering operation, many times, catering chefs will have to pitch in and help out another chef if things get crazy or stressful. An amazing sense of timing is required, since a variety of different foods will have to be ready to go all at once for a large number of guests. These foods have to be completed right before the guests are ready to eat, as such foods can not be permitted to stand around for long. Chef catering jobs also require skills in catering management. These skills necessary include dealing effectively with both wedding coordinators and event planners, managing chefs, relating well to function venues and with clients, finding and purchasing necessary ingredients, maintaining all tools and cooking equipment components, and constructing stations at the different types of venues. For any experienced head chef who is investigating chef catering jobs, he or she will discover that the better paying such jobs are available at the best catering firms that handle movie sets and weddings. Working as a chef in a catering job offers a wide variety of experiences in creating differing kinds of foods. New things can be tried out. Unique concepts might be suggested to clients, who are almost always eager to experience something that is both different and one of a kind. Pastry chefs in catering companies are treated like gods, since sinful and rich desserts are necessary to successfully end any party catering event. A dessert catering chef will have to know how to make beautiful cakes and pastries for birthdays, weddings, and even parties. The advantage to this kind of catering work lies in the fact that the majority of the labor in creating a dessert is done before the day of the catering event in question. This especially pertains to tartlets, mousses, baked goods, and creme caramels that are all prepared either the day before or on the morning of the catering event.

A last thing to keep in mind when a chef is considering working a chef catering job is the number of different chef hats that will be required of him or her. Most private catering services will require chefs who are able to work alone when necessary. In such a case, the catering chef will be required to make all or most of the dishes and to do these all at once. Such a chef will have to demonstrate capabilities as a sous chef, pastry chef, food preparation worker, and even a server, as necessary
