What Do You Hand Over When You Sell Your Retail Store Beyond Stock and the Shop Itself?

Turning in a retail business you have got sold needs a commitment to both sides to openness and professionalism.
Rather than a gracious and open hand over, I have seen things recently where the outgoing retailers who sold their businesses actively sought to form life troublesome to the incoming owner. Folks who have not owned or operated a retail store before are notably challenged in this situation.
A poor handover damages the reputation of the outgoing retailer. It is within the interests of all sides to structure this process.
Here are eight things which should be included in the handover of a retail business from one owner to the next. The items are based mostly on years of shut observation of companies changing hands and seeing what works and what has not worked:
1. Suppliers. An inventory together with for each supplier: business name, merchandise purchased from them, contact name, contact range, contact email address, web site address, current account number, website login details together with password and new account application form.
2. Email. An inventory of every email address utilized by the business and associated passwords.
3. Merchandisers. The names of merchandisers who visit the store and their contact details.
4. Processes. Details of all daily, weekly and monthly processes including details of website logins and passwords necessary for this work plus copies of blank forms necessary for finishing this work.
5. Staff. Details for all employees members: Name, contact phone range, contact email address, superannuation details and details of current responsibilities within the business.
6. Customers. An inventory of all current customers for the business as well as customer name, address, phone number and email address. (I was in a business recently where the outgoing retailer didn't provide something more than a given name and address for a customer - no proper account details.)
7. Laptop details. Details of the placement of original CDs containing software sold with the business. Passwords for all computers. Passwords used for any software on the computers. Passwords used for the in-house network.
8. Operational details. This general list should include the mix to all safes within the business, the security code for any alarm system, the safety code for any external monitoring service.
Provide these items with a skilled trying search with current stock and the outgoing retailer will be remembered as thoroughly professional.
Neglect to supply these items and your name will be damaged and future business prospects impacted. Suppliers especially take a dim read of a poor handover when a retail business changes hands.
If you're not sure whether or not the list works in your situation, discuss it with the other aspect and reach mutual agreement on everything that will be handed over at the consummation of the sale of the business. Time spent up front on this can deliver a better outcome for everyone.
A modification of hands of a retail business can be smooth, enjoyable and profitable for everyone involved. All it takes is a few planning.
