With the growing popularity of online dating as a legitimate, fun and useful method to satisfy people, La Trobe University’s School of Public Health and also the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society are conducting a project to seek out out about the experiences of young adults who use online dating. In particular they’re looking to interview folks between the ages of 18 and 30.
This project grew out of a smaller study conducted by one in all the researchers, Danielle Couch, when she was studying and using on-line dating herself:
‘I’d used varied on-line dating sites to satisfy individuals and had my own little processes for making my way through the web dating world. I’d send a wink or a kiss, perhaps we have a tendency to’d correspond via a few emails or chat online for a while. Then if we tend to decided to fulfill head to head I’d wish to consider when and where that may be. I started wondering if alternative people followed the identical kind of routine or did they are doing things differently. Thus I started developing a research idea.
The end result of Danielle’s ponderings was a small research project as half of her post-graduate studies. She interviewed 15 folks on-line, using chat. In the interviews the participants chatted on-line concerning their own on-line dating experiences, what they did and didn’t do to manage risk, how several people they’d met, how many people they’d had sex with through on-line dating, did they take safety precautions, were they into safe sex and the way did it all compare to meeting folks in different ways.
Operating in public health, I knew there’d been some research in the US wanting at the connection between on-line dating and the spread of sexually transmitted infections - how the internet will allow you to meet people quickly and the way it may be an economical approach to access casual sex partners and doubtless spread infection. I wondered was this relevant in Australia? Did other online daters suppose concerning this stuff? Was it any different to going out and choosing somebody up during a bar on the weekend?’
The interviews ranged from thirty minutes to 3 hours in period, relying on what each person needed to share and what else they were doing at the time.
One in all the items concerning interviewing folks on-line is that you have to recognise they’re probably multi-tasking. We have a tendency to all do it once we’re online. Thus I knew after I was chatting with people I was one in every of several things they might be doing - that’s simply the truth of being online. I had one memorable interview where a participant was in four alternative dating connected chats and conjointly watching some sexually explicit webcam action. I bear in mind her apologising to me at one stage as she was a small amount slow in responding to one of my questions as she was obtaining distracted by the internet-cam show.
The final consensus was the individuals interviewed enjoyed the process; of course many interviewees would often update Danielle via chat on their most recent experiences as they wanted these included in the project.
The findings from this earlier study have led to this project. Over the following few months the researchers are trying to interview between thirty and 40 people via chat regarding their online dating experiences. If you’d prefer to be part of this project and share your thoughts, experiences and opinions regarding online dating then just add onlinedating@latrobe.edu. to your messenger or visit project webpage to search out out more.
