If you are a regular follower of our tweets and blogs or a friend of ours on facebook, you'll know that we have monitored and published trends of online video viewing.

2009 saw massive increases in uk sites which included videos - a 40% increase on 2008. TV brodcasters joined up with major online companies and organisations to collaborate in online programming. 2009 also saw the overall global online video market had soured and the worlds largest network Scanscout reach over 80 million viewers. There were also technological advancements, where video adverts appeared in printed magazines through the use of slimline hardware (screens) and rechargeable batteries. Pretty cool eh. In addition, UK online advertising overtook TV sales for the first time ever.

For 2010, eMarketer has reported this week, through their extensive report "Video Content and Syndication:
Long-Form Content on the Rise" that online video viewing has increased steadily in the US and they forecast continued growth until at least 2014. There is now the greater availability of long-form content, the popularity of venues such as Hulu and broadcast TV sites, technology developments and internet users’ growing comfort with online video. Sports programming is also moving swiftly into this realm, with mega-events such as the Olympics, March Madness and the World Cup reaching tens of millions of viewers through live streaming.

Emarketer also goes on to say it its report that as online video strengthens its hold, content owners are getting more sophisticated about how they syndicate their content online, whether by building social network interaction into their players, populating clips across sites such as YouTube and Hulu, or employing the services of ad networks and content specialists to maximize exposure to media.

Technology companies are also seizing an opportunity to market devices that take advantage of the consumer’s desire to merge the online and TV viewing experiences. These trends are creating an environment in which online video will continue to thrive well into the future.

So will broadcast programming survive. Yes! Yes it will. People still want to watch programmes, they just want it on demand. Agencies are hosting meetings with online video ad networks like Break, Tremor and Brightroll to discuss the opportunities in video production, promotion and distribution. New TVs being manufactured contain the ability to connect to the internet and watch programmes online. Apple Boxes, nintendo wii etc are now containing apps to watch broadcasters online players - of which they can still make their money through pre-rolls, post- rolls and commercial breaks. In fact, broadcast is still big business and will continue to be big business.

In addition, we recently posted about HTML5 video capabilities. Another fantastic advancement in online video and its great for us as a video production company, as it allows our videos to be http streamed in high definition, cheaply, easily without buffering. And lets face it, high definition is the way video should be seen. This has also opened up the ability for us to provide high definition video email marketing solutions!

The future is high definition on demand programming in an opensource format. Hold on tight viewers.....
