Being photographed will be a healing expertise, even a personally evolutionary expertise for both the subject and also the photographer. Is that this an outrageous statement? At face price it definitely is. I certainly would have thought thus years ago after I worked as a psychotherapist. Indeed, after I began my photography career I assumed I had left my mental health work in the dust. Imagine my surprise when my photography clients and I usually found ourselves emotionally touched, even moved, throughout our photography sessions.

There are distinct parallels between effective therapy and creative photography. Therapy can provide experiences whereby new behaviors are "sampled" or experimented with. Inventive photography can give similar experiences. Positive new dynamics will be experienced as the photography subjects, prompted by the photographer, interact in new ways that throughout the photo session. These dynamics and behaviors are presented in an exceedingly safe or non-threatening arena. After all, it's "simply" a photography session. The emotional impact, however, will be profound. The photographs later serve as a strong visual reminder or "anchor" for the experience.

Even a personal portrait session will be a growth catalyst. An adept photographer can reveal hidden or latent facets of the subject. This may be as simple as somebody who believed they were unattractive, or didn't photograph well, being absolutely shocked once they see their images. A family photo session would possibly encompass family members experiencing interpersonal conflict. Traditional photography may inadvertently exacerbate this dynamic as some individuals realize being photographed stressful. Photographing with the distinct intent to create an very sensible family experience, not just smart photos, is using photography as a "healing art."

I've photographed several families where if the photo session were to run its "natural" course, a personal or family subset would be marginalized. A photographer sensitive to family dynamics and the healing potential of photography can structure the session thus the family can experience new dynamics among a non threatening environment. This is not insight therapy. The photographer wouldn't treat family dynamics. The "healing" or positive experiences would impact the family via the experience itself. The photographer trying to reinforce the positive experience via his insightful comments would solely garner resistance and undermine the positive experience. As any adept therapist (and photographer) knows, "what is resisted persists." The wise therapist and photographer settle for whatever dynamics the family or system presents, and then gracefully leads them to new experiences.

Artistic photography doesn't just document our lives, it affirms it. It might be a heroic struggle with an illness or celebrating life's transitions like birth, graduations, marriage, and yes, even death. I've photographed varied families where a personal had a terminal disease and knew this would be a final opportunity to incorporate loved ones during a portrait session.

Sensible photography will replicate us at our greatest and function a catalyst for our future growth. Once I do my best work, the topics see a glimpse of the Spirit "peeking through," mirrored in their image. Serving as a photographer may be a privilege and an honor.
