Singing Lessons: How To Take Criticism

As a performing songwriter and vocal coach, I've got scan the Lefsetz Letter on and off for a while, written by Bob Lefsetz, music business attorney, consultant and style-maker. Recently there has been a conflict between Lefsetz and Taylor Swift over her new song "Mean;" he understands through the Howard Stern show, the song could be directed at him for repeatedly insulting the singer/songwriter, saying "Taylor Swift can't sing." A year and a 0.5 ago Lefsetz said regarding Swift, "nobody's done as abundant for ladies's music since Joni Mitchell." Every singer knows there's invariably work to do to improve your voice, but Lefsetz's flip on Swift is confusing. Is "Mean" concerning him? If thus, he's pretty upset regarding it; he chastises Swift for stooping so low, reiterating that she "still can't sing."

The conflict brings up an issue I deal with as a singer/songwriter and as a singing teacher usually: the distinction between criticism and judgement and how an artist is expected to require criticism.

Artists absorb comments from folks who are being mean, but feel the critic status allows them that latitude. It's understood that the performer ought to understand how to house criticism and take criticism quietly, politely as professionals. However silently withstanding jabs and insults does not equate accepting criticism. As a singing teacher, a singer and a parent, I feel fiercely protecting of artists from writers who injury egos with apathetic and reckless flicks.

One amongst the foremost important singing lessons a singer can learn is how to distinguish between criticism and judgement, hear the former and ignore the latter. Both are part of a performer's life and half of the commodification of all things created by people. Criticism could be a creative endeavor to deconstruct and reconstruct art with the need to unveil the subject of the artist, in an attempt to draw close to to the artist. Judgement may be a totalitization of the artist - "This can be awesome!" "This sucks!" "Purchase this!" "Do not buy this!" It is a projection of the pundit only. It has very little to do with the work. It reflects how the commentator feels about himself (or herself) when he listens to the artist. If Bob Lefetz writes that Talyor Swift "can't sing" - it is mean. It isn't a pleasant factor to mention out loud, but it is not criticism. It is his judgment.

Can Taylor Swift learn to sing better?

You'll be able to continuously learn to enhance your voice, however clearly Taylor Swift will sing and having good pitch or excellent singing technique isn't what makes one a great singer anyway.

Do what you gotta do: look within the mirror and say I really like you, repeat "I am awesome" as a personal mantra for 6 months.Train your brain so you'll pay your energy on what is vital: learning the way to sing better, improving your pitch, improving your breath support, learning to jot down higher - together with personal and social responsibility.

Lefsetz praises Jennifer Anniston for taking it when individuals "rip her a replacement a--hole," not like Swift. He's comparing the reaction of a 20 year old with that of a 41 year old. Maybe life expertise has taught Anniston not to let the turkeys get her down. It's a rare bird born with that ability, and "Mean," might be what a lady's gotta sing until she gets there.

I've got been stung. It's never fun. The a lot of experience you have with it, and also the more you focus on developing your voice - not what some guy thinks of you - the more you save energy for what matters.

As a vocal coach, after I see my students caught up in the concern of what others suppose, how they could be judged, I remind them to focus.

Become nice at what you do, learn to sing better, notice your voice. Keep in mind that each note you sing is beautiful.

Everyone who will talk, can sing. Who cares what Bob Lefsetz thinks?
