I confess right up front that the subsequent info represents a very informal, and unscientific survey. However, as of this past week I've finally finished surveying exactly a hundred physical education academics, some by the phone, some personally, and I asked the following six questions.

1. Name

2. School and Location

3. Total Years of Physical Education Teaching Experience

4. The number of obese boys you have seen who can do pull ups

5. The quantity of obese girls you've got seen who can do pull ups

6. The total range of obese students you have seen who will do pull ups

Zero Obese Students Will Do Pull Ups

Because it turns out these teachers have a mean of 8.8 years of teaching expertise beneath their belt. Which is to mention, collectively they need 880 years (8.eight years X a hundred lecturers) of teaching experience among them. And in those 880 years these one hundred physical educators have seen ZERO obese boys, ZERO obese women, and ZERO OBESE STUDENTS WHO CAN DO PULL UPS. On the flip facet, in all of those 880 years of physical education expertise EVERY STUDENT who could do pull ups was comparatively lean, strong, and NOT OBESE!

Let's Speculate

Now let's do a little speculation. Let's be ultra conservative and estimate that every of these teachers taught 100 students per faculty year. Meaning every teacher would have overseen 880 students (one hundred students X 8.8 years) during this period. And collectively they would have overseen 88,000 (880 students X 100 teachers) students. And out of 88,000 students these a hundred lecturers had never seen an obese kid who might perform even one pull up. That is to say the obese child who can perform at least one pull up is as rare because the Loch Ness Monster or Huge Foot. They only don't exist.

Starting Young and Winning the War on Childhood Obesity

The implication of this survey in fact is that, if we begin early (kindergarten or perhaps pre-school) and help kids across America learn to physically pull their own weight, we tend to can flip the tide on childhood obesity. Yes with this frighteningly straightforward and price-effective (ok it's cheap) resolution in hand, we have a tendency to will create a whole generation of students who will physically pull their own weight, and who can have naturally immunized themselves against obesity for all times by learning and maintaining the flexibility to try to to at least one pull up. My solely query is, what are we looking ahead to?

If different physical educators or coaches around the state would like to weigh in on this survey, we would be more than happy to feature your contribution to the existing data. You'll do so by visiting the web site listed below and clicking on the Survey Tab.
