In 2004, a survey by NPD Group showed that on average, women started to use beauty merchandise at the age of 17. These days that average is 13.
Influence of Media on Youngsters & Beauty
There is a scene in "Toddlers & Tiaras," the TLC reality series, where two-year-recent Marleigh is perched in front of a mirror, smothering her face with blush and lipstick. She giggles as her mother attempts to hold the squealing toddler still, lathering her legs with self-tanner. "Marleigh loves to induce tan," her mom says, as the woman presses her face against the mirror.
The quote on top of is regarding Marleigh, one in all the pageant ladies on the show. Will anyone find something disturbing about this picture? She is solely two years old nevertheless already fully engaged with the wonder culture. Her mother has already immersed her daughter with the message that being lovely matters and the attention it brings, important. Sadly the ridiculousness of this scene does not finish on screen, it's an outline of our current generation.
What do these shows have in common? "Extreme makeover", "I Want a Famous Face" "Very little Miss Good" "Toddlers & Tiaras". These are shows targeted around raising the bar of what is considered the norm when it comes to beautifying our children. Several years back, most parents would have been horrified at what they were seeing. However currently media is pushing the boundaries. However the worst of media influence is not in these blatantly beauty centric shows.
With reality TV shows, thousands of beauty product commercials, air-brushed magazine ads, and beautiful celebrities adorning every movies we watch, the norm of the importance of beauty has modified dramatically. In 2004, a survey by NPD Cluster showed that on average, girls began to use beauty products at the age of 17. Nowadays that average is 13. However even that figure might be an overstatement. In step with a market analysis firm Experian,
* forty three percent of 6 to nine year olds are already using lipstick or lip gloss
* thirty eight percent are using hairstyling products
* 12 p.c use different other cosmetic product
By the time they are 50 years previous, an average ladies would have spent nearly $three hundred,000 on just their hair and face in keeping with Newsweek's research on beauty trends (noted below). However is this stunning considering ladies ages 11 to fourteen are exposed to five hundred+ advertisements per day? 8 to twelve years recent already pay $40+ million a month on beauty products in keeping with NPD Group. Teenagers? $100 Million.
More Statistics on Beauty
* Cosmetic Surgery Procedures for Underneath eighteen - Doubled last 10 years
* fourteen% of Botox injections given to 19-34 age group, seeking "preventative treatments"
* [American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery]
* forty two% of first to 3rd Graders wish to be thinner
* eighty one% of ten years olds worry obtaining fat
"When you've got tweens putting on firming cream... it's clear they're wanting for imaginary flaws," - Harvard psychologist Nancy Etcoff
It is time folks become a lot of awake to how our culture has been changing. Media has played a serious role of raising the importance of being beautiful. A lot of and a lot of teenagers and adults are turning into infatuated with being pretty and skinny. We have a tendency to are surrounded by lovely celebrities raising our own dissatisfaction about our appearance and bodies. It's no surprise less individuals are happy with themselves and depression rates still rise. We should all play our half and protect not solely the eyes of our children however our own eyes to the type of media we have a tendency to indulge in.
* What are your thoughts regarding young children and youths spending thus abundant time and money on beautifying themselves?
* How about Adults?
* What will be done to help push up against our image driven culture?
* What can you do?
