My Thoughts:Predictable
Review: "2001 Maniacs" is supposed to be a remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis' "2 Thousand Maniacs". Whereas I've got never seen that movie, the matter with "2001 Maniacs" is that it's too predictable. .
The story follows two separate teams of young people who are headed to Daytona Beach Fl. for spring break. Unfortunately they come across a detour sign within the road and as any sensible horror fan is aware of, "Detour" signs always mean "danger" in a horror movie. Before they know it, each groups of teens have stumbled upon a hick town called "Pleasant Valley", where the people albeit strange as hell, seem friendly enough. Soon another handful of young individuals arrive into town, a black guy named Malcolm and his asian girlfriend Kat.
The voters of Pleasant Valley build all of the northern young of us their guests of honor and waste no time in showing a little little bit of southern hospitality. However soon a number of the young northern travelers begin to disappear, and it becomes evident that each one could not be what it looks with the so known as smart people of Pleasant Valley who behind the unsuspecting northerners backs, are designing a huge "Feast"...literally. "2001 Maniacs" offers up a smart subplot which explains the cities sudden look out of nowhere. It appears back during the civil war a cluster of renegade northern troopers tired the complete town of Pleasant Valley, all 2001 of it's citizens in fact.
Now they have come back for revenge against the north, on the identical day their town was desecrated all of those years ago no less, and it's made obvious too soon that these northern travelers are in for a few unhealthy times. However...it takes the travelers awhile to comprehend it and therefore the question becomes, can they be able to place a pair of and 2 along before it's too late? Whereas "2001 Maniacs" certainly delivers in the blood, gore, and overall splatterfest department...the film lacks an ora of mystery and telegraphs itself method too early. Everything happens the manner you would expect it to up till the top, where a little bit of creativity is shown when the last two survivors are thrown into a fight for his or her lives. The kills are rather creative but you'll pretty much figure out who's going to die and in what order which additional enhances this films predictable nature. The people of Pleasant Valley themselves are an annoying bunch, even the very engaging ladies in the city are painful to watch once they begin talking.
The southern stereotypes from beastiality jokes, incest jokes, and just overall southerners being disturbingly odd jokes are all over the place during this movie. And that's what kills most of the fun. It would've been a pleasant change of pace to have the folks of Pleasant Valley differ in persona rather than having each one act the identical because the other. The kids of the movie are portrayed a very little bit better. While we tend to get the standard group of men out to urge laid, we tend to additionally get a guy with 2 female friends who has a huge twist applied to his character later in the movie. You will have to see it for yourself but take my word for it it's pretty funny, and we get the interracial couple in which the black guy could be a biker and digs Led Zepplin...that just about is the final in making an outside the box character.
Robert Englund gives a good performance as Mayor Buckman of Pleasant Valley which is rivaled solely by Lin Shaye as Granny Boone. However even the 2 of them can't absolutely create up for the rest of the actors who portrayed Pleasant Valley citizens in a terribly subpar manner. "2001 Maniacs" will have it's good points conjointly, and director Tim Sullivan who additionally co-wrote the film with penner Chris Kobin - very knew how to form this a "horror movie". No annoying cut aways or shortening of scenes to avoid showing an excessive amount of blood on screen. No we tend to get the total deal here that includes body crushing, mutilations, eyeballs starting up of their sockets, death by acid, and two others kills which are even additional twisted than those I just mentioned. I just want they'd surrounded all of this great blood, gore, and mayhem with some higher villains.
Whereas I assumed Englund was a great villain as Mayor Buckman, the opposite baddies were either portrayed by unhealthy actors or were just too annoying to be cool villains. Currently you could say as a result of I am a northern guy I do not connect with the whole southern persona thing, which is why I didn't care for many of the villain characters. But on the flipside of that I thought the Firefly clan in "House of a thousand Corpses" which was however another psycho redneck flick, were awesome villains. But they were a lot of more hardcore than the Pleasant Valley folk, who came off to me as simply a very little bit too cornball and not serious enough to make them sensible villains.
Execs: Inventive kills, blood and gore abound, the northern travelers were likeable for the foremost part. The films final act that includes a showdown between the 2 survivors and Mayor Buckman and also the voters of Pleasant Valley was awesome. Lin Shaye offers a good performance as Granny Boone despite restricted screen time.
Cons: Aside from Robert Englund as Mayor Buckman The villains weren't badass enough, and like I stated within the review everything is spelled out to the viewer too quickly on what will happen to those kids and how. I conjointly did not just like the ending and the chain of events that lead up to the films final ending left me shaking my head.
Overall: Average horror movie that has a few things that save it from being a total waste of time. Value a rental when it hits dvd March 28th.
