Delivering a retail business you have got sold requires a commitment to each sides to openness and professionalism.
Rather than a gracious and open hand over, I've got seen things recently where the outgoing retailers who sold their businesses actively sought to create life troublesome to the incoming owner. Individuals who haven't owned or operated a retail store before are significantly challenged in this situation.
A poor handover damages the name of the outgoing retailer. It's in the interests of all sides to structure this process.
Here are eight things that ought to be included in the handover of a retail business from one owner to the next. The items are primarily based on years of shut observation of companies changing hands and seeing what works and what has not worked:
1. Suppliers. An inventory including for every supplier: business name, products purchased from them, contact name, contact range, contact email address, website address, current account variety, web site login details together with password and new account application form.
2. Email. An inventory of each email address used by the business and associated passwords.
3. Merchandisers. The names of merchandisers who visit the shop and their contact details.
4. Processes. Details of all daily, weekly and monthly processes as well as details of web site logins and passwords necessary for this work plus copies of blank forms necessary for completing this work.
5. Staff. Details for all staff members: Name, contact phone variety, contact email address, superannuation details and details of current responsibilities in the business.
6. Customers. A listing of all current customers for the business including client name, address, phone range and email address. (I used to be in an exceedingly business recently where the outgoing retailer didn't give something a lot of than a given name and address for a customer - no correct account details.)
7. Computer details. Details of the placement of original CDs containing software sold with the business. Passwords for all computers. Passwords used for any software on the computers. Passwords used for the in-house network.
8. Operational details. This general list should embody the combination to all or any safes within the business, the security code for any alarm system, the protection code for any external monitoring service.
Provide these items as well as a professional looking shop with current stock and the outgoing retailer can be remembered as thoroughly professional.
Neglect to produce these things and your name will be broken and future business prospects impacted. Suppliers especially take a dim view of a poor handover when a retail business changes hands.
If you are not sure whether the list works in your scenario, discuss it with the opposite facet and reach mutual agreement on everything that will be handed over at the consummation of the sale of the business. Time spent up front on this can deliver a better outcome for everyone.
A modification of hands of a retail business can be smooth, enjoyable and profitable for everybody involved. All it takes is a few planning.
