The thyroid gland serves many functions. Weight gain has usually been 'blamed' on a slow or sluggish thyroid. This article aims to explain the basic physiology, two of the numerous hormones and functions of those in relation to weight control, and ways in which an underactive (slow) thyroid gland can be helped by prescribed drugs or natural remedies.
Basic physiology of the Thyroid.
The thyroid gland is situated below the Larynx and forward of the Trachea. It's composed of two lobes of connective tissue called the Isthmus. The thyroid is one in every of the biggest endocrine glands. Being very vascular the thyroid gland seems redder than the surrounding tissue.
Thyroid Gland Functions.
The thyroid hormones embody Triiodothyronine and Tetraiodothyronine (commonly referred to as Thyroxine). The ratio of those hormones is 9:1, Tetraiodothyronine:Triiodothyronine.
Thyroid hormones affect most tissue in the human body. The bodys metabolism depends on an adequately functioning thyroid gland providing these thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones facilitate within the metabolism of glucose, protein, and fats. In the identical approach as burning fuel in an exceedingly fireplace, this metabolism results in a rise in (body) temperature. An inadequate offer of those hormones causes the opposite result of slowing the metabolism of glucose, protein, and fats effecting a decrease in body temperature.
Hyposecretion (low secretion) of the thyroid hormones has been shown to cause weight gain and apathy amongst other effects. So, it can be seen that some causes of the overweight will be attributed to 'slow' thyroid gland. Thus the stimulation of the thyroid gland will result weight loss.
Prescribed drugs for the treatment of Hypothyroidism.
Levothyroxine: is the generic name for the artificial form of thyroxine, a thyroid hormone replacement drug. This drug contains the artificial form of Tetraiodothyronine. This drug replaces the lack of tetraiodothyronine rather than causing the thyroid gland to produce more. All medicine have some aspect effects. Facet effects of Levothyroxine can embrace tremors, weight loss, alopecia, fever, fatigue, amongst others.
Liotrix: is the generic name for the synthetic type of the mixture of Tetraiodothyronine and Triiodothyronine. This drug replaces the shortage of these two hormones. Facet effects of Liotrix can embody fatigue, alopecia, increased blood pressure, dry skin, amongst others.
There are far more drugs for the treatment of hypothyroidism.
Natural remedies for a healthy thyroid gland.
Bitters: may be a cluster of herbs that features a stimulating impact on the body. Bitters have been shown in clinical trials to assist with gentle hypothyroidism.
Bladderwack: is an iodine wealthy seaweed. Iodine has been shown to assist low thyroid hormone production.
Guglipid: is an extract from the Guggal tree. This extract will be helpful when Triiodothyronine hormone is low. The guggal tree has been used for centuries for its health benefits.
Myrrh: could be a tree resin. It's been shown to stimulate the thyroid.
Nori: may be a seaweed. Nori contains a high mineral content and contains Iodine. Iodine is important for thyroid health.
Piper Longum: is the Indian Long Pepper. The pepper can help to increase thyroid hormone levels. It works by increasing the metabolic heat energy.
There are more natural remedies said to help thyroid function.
Overweight has several causes and Hypothyroidism is just one.
