Germs like bacteria, fungi, and viruses can cause various sicknesses in people. These germs are present everywhere. Even your home is not safe from these germs. In fact, it is what causes the common cold, flu, and allergies. To protect your home, you resort to buying antimicrobial products.
Examples of these products include chlorine bleach, antibacterial hand soap, detergents, dishwashing liquids, and many more. Some household items can also be treated with antimicrobial ingredients during their production such as toys and kitchen utensils.
The question now here lies on whether or not antimicrobial products work. For starters, you have to be aware that the best way to stop germs from spreading is to wash your hands with soap and water frequently. If you find washing your hands with soap and water a bit on the tedious side, sanitizer can help but cannot penetrate dirt and grease and should never be considered a proper substitution for washing after using a toilet.
Diluted bleach as an antimicrobial product is ideal in cleaning up dirt, mud, and body fluid spills. It is very effective in keeping the germs of feces, blood, and vomit at bay. To answer the question if antimicrobial products work or not, yes they do work. But that's in a controlled environment in the laboratory. Their effectiveness in the home has not been proven in a defined way.
Mothers out there will be tempted to buy toys and clothing treated with antimicrobials in the hope of it stopping germs from spreading around the house. The real deal, however, is that it isn't necessary to buy toys with antimicrobial products.
To stop germs from spreading, clean machine-washable toys in the dishwasher or washing machine after a sick kid plays with them. If machine washing is not advisable, just hand-wash the toy with soap, water, and bleach if necessary. Plain soap will do if no one in your household has a higher risk for infection.
Having antimicrobial products in the home is a preventive measure against the spreading of germs. It is in a consumer's best interest to choose a product that will do its job of stopping germs dead on its track. With all the different products in the market today, it can be confusing to choose which antimicrobial products are best for the home.
Basically, all antimicrobial products work in the same way. The only difference is in the branding and the ingredients used to provide the antimicrobial effect. Also, price matters in choosing a germ-killing product. However, it does not necessarily mean that an expensive cleanser is more effective than a cheaper one. Household cleaning and disinfecting don't really need the strength of industrial cleaners.
Microbes are something that should be dealt with accordingly especially if it is your family's health that becomes a concern. Remember, though, that hand washing is still the best way to stop viruses from spreading in your home. Practice this habit and reduce the incidence of colds, coughs, and flu in your household. Buying antimicrobial products is still recommended if you want to make sure that germs are killed on the spot.
