The way we take care of ourselves reflects the way we feel about ourselves. This mental attitude affects the way others feel about us and can affect the way we are accepted in social and work environments.

The importance of hygiene includes effects on our social lives, our physiological wellbeing and health reasons. Keeping good hygiene helps limit the potential for infections and illnesses. Proper hygiene is also important since it eliminates unpleasant body odors.

Body odor is a major problem in social environments and affects the way people think about you and react to you. No one cares to spend time with someone who has an obvious body odor. Regardless of the personal character of the individual, poor hygiene will cause people to not be interested in social interacting with this individual.

However, social reasons and bad odor are far from the only reason that proper hygiene is important. The importance of hygiene extends to the physical health of the individual with poor hygiene. What hygiene and proper cleaving does to a body is it scrubs away dead cells that are on our bodies. These dead cells are a natural process.

Washing with soap and water and exercising proper hygiene helps remove the dead cells that exist on our skin and in our hair. When we fail to do this, we allow the dead cells to remain on us and this can attract bacteria that carries illness. By maintaining proper hygiene, this can be avoided.

Another chemical reaction that happens with the body is the creation of sweet and pheromones. When we exert ourselves, we cause our pituitary glands to react which results in sweat. Our glands also release an odor into the air. By washing and using deodorant, we remove and eliminate the odors that were created during exercise. But this process does not need exercise to occur.

This process occurs naturally and can be triggered by excessive heat. Regardless of the conditions that cause our glands to excrete odors, we carry these odors on us and our clothing. It is these odors that are socially offensive.

Another importance of proper hygiene is that it can cause cuts and abrasions to become infected. When we cut ourselves or scrape our knees, elbows or other areas, we make our bodies vulnerable to bacteria that our skin can fend off. Cutting ourselves exposes the tissue beneath our skin and makes this area accessible to infection.

One of the most important aspects of hygiene that should be followed strictly is hand washing. When we wash our hands, we are eliminating bacteria that we have come into contact with through the handling of food and other items that may have bacteria on them. It is vital that proper hand washing be practiced after using a toilet. It is at this time that we come into close contact with bacteria that can be harmful to our health.

These are a few of the examples of the importance of proper hygiene. The effects go well beyond our health and social interactions. They also affect our mental well being. Not only do we feel bad about ourselves but the way we are treated due to poor hygiene can cause long term psychological effects.
