The skills required to successfully start a retail business are the same skills required to succeed in any business.
Leadership Skills
You must be a strong leader and decision maker. While retail isn't fast pace like the stock market, you have to be able to make informed decisions on what to buy, when to buy and how much to buy. Buying the wrong product at the wrong time will cause you to have an excess in inventory that you really didn't need, or bought at the wrong price.
Dedication
Starting a retail business requires a great deal of time and dedication. It may be your dream to start a business so you can stand back and plan the logistics, oversee the fine details and delegate all the mundane tasks to your employees, but to make a true profit in retail the owner needs to be the most dedicated employee. You will have to work when no one else wants to, do things that others refuse, and solve issues that your employees often won't even care about. Sound good to you? To a true business owner, they wouldn't want it any other way. The fun in creating your own business is implementing the processes and procedures that will insure that your business succeeds. That is the definition of dedication.
Marketing
You must be able to analyze your competition and your current market to determine what will set your retail establishment out from the rest. If your community has three car dealerships already, what is the benefit to opening a fourth? Are the current dealerships over priced, under stocked or lacking in customer service? If they are already filling the current demand adequately, it will be an uphill battle to maintain a fourth dealership, when the others have already established some customer loyalty. It is better to find an area where the demand for goods is not being met. Then you need to market that demand and insure that you are not just advertising "the best prices" but also delivering. The key to successful advertising campaign is honesty.
Salesmanship
The greatest asset in any retail business is its customer service. You can have the best products and the best prices, but without the best people, you cannot have a successful retail establishment. The greatest retail chains discovered this years ago. On the contrary if you have the best people, good quality products and reasonable prices, you will get the sale every time. After all, the goal in customer service is not to sell to someone just one time, but every time. Creating an atmosphere for customer loyalty is essential in retail longevity. Being a customer oriented person, that enjoys working with people is critical to succeed in retail.
If you have these four skills you can successfully start and maintain any retail business. There are many additional assets, like ingenuity or creativity that will benefit you in starting your own retail business, but they are not as critical as leadership, dedication, marketing and salesmanship.
