Sustainability cover many areas, from manufacturing issues, production of food, water technology, and one of the most important issues, waste management. Recycling is one of the greatest solutions for waste management. Most households are doing their part recycling their waste and disposing of their garbage properly, as cities have put recycling programs into place. More and more efforts for recycling are being observed around the community. However, recycling goes farther than putting trash where it belongs or separating containers. It extends to daily used of items, the way we consume, and how we consume, and at what rate. After all, everything that we buy and consume will end up as garbage at some point - organic garbage or solid waste.

There is much that we can do as individuals to reduce the need for recycling large amounts of material. We can reuse certain items, give a second life to other items by looking for innovative ways to use them or turn them into something else, and we can alter certain items as well for other uses or gifting. A carton of eggs (not the plastic one) is suitable for seed planting - to offer a mild example. Certain pieces of clothing make for great decorative pillows, also using other pieces of clothing as filler. These are just easy examples to prove that anything can have a second life with a bit of imagination and creativity.

Composting is another way to recycle organic materials from your kitchen - eggshells, salad pieces ... It will make great fertilizer for a garden. Reducing waste, reusing items, and repurposing, are ways in which individuals can help waste management. Opting for products in packages that are more environmentally friendly is one way of reducing waste, for example, choosing the rice that comes in the paper bag instead of the plastic bag, or the eggs in the cardboard carton, instead of the Styrofoam container. These are all small steps that add up. Recycling properly other materials allows the proper disposal of garbage that otherwise will end up in landfills. It helps the industry grow, as it reuses materials such as plastics and glass to create new products. While it saves the environment, it reduces cost, and helps the industry and economy - this is waste management at its best, and we as responsible citizens and consumers are an important part of this process, whether we realize it or not.

However, there is still much to accomplish in the area of recycling and waste management nationwide and worldwide. Citizens and corporations can do their part by utilizing wheelie bins, kitchen cadies, and curbside boxes, but the effort has to go beyond that point. Today, many cities still send their garbage to other locations, as there is no local access to landfill or waste disposal. Strict recycling laws and programs are needed in those situations. However, recycling is just the beginning, and there is much more that each individual can do to reduce waste. In this sense, waste management becomes a way of life.
