Increasing numbers of people within the developed world take into account themselves religious while not belonging to a religion. Some of the dominant world religions believe there is no religious life outside their confines. Let's take a while currently then to explore the variations between spirituality and religion.
Both spirituality and faith, at a core level are about our relationship with God, the Divine, the Mystery or Absolute truth, by no matter name you provide it. From my point of read the similarities finish here.
Spirituality as I see it is an innate dimension to our existence and our relationship with the Mystery of life. Religions are manmade structures that obtain to define and control our religious nature. Religion used to be a cultures one size fits all spirituality and in several components of the planet still are. Spirituality is personal, fluid and evolving. Religions are made with rigid and moralized belief systems.
Faith is predicated on faith and accepted beliefs which define the parameters of what's allowed to be believed. Concepts and beliefs beyond these boundaries are usually considered heresy and typically punishable one means or another, even with death. Religion has strict codes of what's right and wrong and applicable punishments in each this life and beyond. This polarized moralizing of human behavior may be a system of control based on fear. Neitzsche pointedly dispelled this cannon of spiritual dogma when he said "there are not any ethical phenomena solely the moral interpretation of phenomena".
What's amazing is that despite all of this there are folks who are ready to find authentic spirituality inside the confines of their accepted religion.
Spirituality tends to be independent of non secular doctrine and belief systems, although most individuals who consider themselves religious and not religious construct a belief system that they feel snug with. If this personal non secular belief system becomes inflexible and rigid it will be as limiting to non secular development as those of faith, though less probably to fill you with fear, guilt and shame.
The human mind creates systems of belief one approach or another. The majority of these beliefs are received as conditioning from the culture that we have a tendency to age in. Religious development can be seen as a process of releasing ourselves from the conditioned state of the mind and thus a restricted expertise of self. For it is beyond the conditioned mind set that we tend to experience the Mystery of the Divine. Within the depths of this experience of Self beyond mind the boundaries of separation dissolve and also the Self is experienced as One with the Divine. This process of non secular evolution into awakening is the very nature of life itself.
Religion being manmade, being made in the consciousness of separation, places the divine outside of ourselves. This is often true even when the supply of the religion taught the religious truth of unity with God. Christianity may be a nice example. Jesus in his teaching clearly said that the kingdom of heaven is inside all of us. How then did it become an area where God lives and we have a tendency to go where we go after we're dead if we have a tendency to've been good and lived by the prescribed rules?
One answer is that spiritual teachers like Jesus spoke from a additional evolved state of consciousness, and people who came when them and formulated religion in their name, were of a less evolved level of consciousness, and interpreted the teachings from this low level of consciousness so distorting it.
Another interpretation is that faith was identified as a means that of controlling an entire population of individuals, and its teachings were distorted to the current end. Taking Christianity is an example again it looks quite apparent to me that both these interpretations are aspects of how Christianity became what it's today. Do not think so? Well how is it that hundreds of years of war and countless atrocities have been committed within the name of religion, when pretty much all religions hold a core tenant of Thou shalt not kill, and Do onto others as you'd have them do unto you, or the like?
Spirituality in its nature requires the questioning of beliefs, that tends to line it at odds with religion. Professing being spiritual doesn't essentially mean that we do question our beliefs, but free of the confines of spiritual dogma, life can inevitably provide the circumstances for us to a lot of readily do so. Accepting this opportunity to stay stepping beyond the boundaries of the identity that we hold, is that the suggests that of living spirituality. Spirituality then requires forging your own unique path of awakening to our true nature.
