Spirituality is very different from religion. Here are their 10 differences.
1. Religion is typically passed on from parent to child, like an inheritance. Whereas spirituality is one thing that one discovers through personal experience in life. My religion is Christianity as a result of my parents sported additionally this religion. I discovered my spirituality when I read the works of John of the Cross and the Hindu philosophers on yoga. This was all alone, without the information or encouragement of my parents.
2. Faith is composed of a system of beliefs and practices which will be seen by different people. That's why these comprise an external system. Whereas in spirituality the system is internal, it is not seen by alternative individuals as a result of the belief system is only in our head. In Christianity there's a creed that I memorized, the Apostles' Creed. There have been external rituals I went through: baptism, confirmation, communion, etc. In spirituality the beliefs I hold aren't on paper. They are in my mind only. The beliefs are not set, as in religion. They're to not be memorized. I believe I am surrounded by spirit beings but I don't build a public announcement of this.
3. Religion is sure to a pattern of worship and ritual and this pattern is the identical for all. Whereas in spirituality persons may worship and have rituals but every person worships in his own approach and does the rituals in his own means also. Within the branch of Christianity where I belong the style of worship is the Mass, and the pattern of the Mass is the identical regardless of where I'm within the world. There is the introduction, the readings, the sermon, the offertory, the consecration, the communion and therefore the ending. This pattern does not modification in the east or within the west, within the north or south of the earth. In spirituality I worship God however within the silence of my heart and the pattern is up to me. I may worship him whereas standing, while walking, even whereas sleeping. There's no fastened posture.
4. This is often something that up to now religions are burdened with, separatism and exclusivity. There's continually the thought in religion that this or that religion is the right one and is the only certain manner to God. Christians separate themselves from Muslims. Even churches within Christianity separate themselves from one another. Whereas in spirituality we extend the hand of fellowship to whoever has the same spirit as us. As a Christian I am become independent from a non-Christian. But as a non secular person I relate with all people who have the same religious inclinations as I have.
5. Faith is practiced in establishments, in huge organizations. Spirituality is practiced in private, in my personal life, even once I share it with others. Christianity has several institutions, massive church organizations, with hierarchies. Spirituality has no such institutions. There is no superior person in spirituality giving instructions to others what to do. There is no hierarchy or grades of authority. Each one is an authority to himself. As a Christian I've got monks and bishops above me. As a non secular person, there is solely God and myself and others on the same level with me.
6. In faith there's church attendance. And this is expected to be regular, once every week, on behalf of me on a Sunday. In spirituality we have a tendency to have gatherings but these are informal. We tend to have gatherings round the Net, away from the ancient church.
7. In religion there are beliefs to be adhered to, otherwise if we don't adhere to these beliefs we have a tendency to become heretics and if we tend to separate we become schismatics. We tend to are committed to carry on to these beliefs, whether or not we cannot perceive these beliefs, like the idea within the Trinity. In spirituality we are free to hold any belief, even if from the viewpoint of churches these are unorthodox. An example will create this clear. My church holds officially the idea that the human person is created of body and soul only. This is orthodox belief. But as a non secular person I hold the unorthodox belief that the human person is created from body, soul and spirit.
8. In faith there is pattern of behavior that we just have to go through. And we cannot confiscate this pattern or amendment it. For example in my church the pattern of behavior is baptism by pouring of water on the forehead. This can not be changed. You can not experiment with different styles of liquid, like juice, or pour the water on the feet. It's to be on the forehead. Whereas in spirituality we are absolve to experiment. Perhaps immersion in perfumed heat water is better as a type of non secular relaxation.
9. In faith we tend to have a group composed of theologians who regulate the doctrines in that religion. And they continually base their speculations on the authority of the Bible or of their tradition. In spirituality we do not have such a group. Anybody can teach anybody else and we have a tendency to don't base our teaching on the authority of a book or tradition. We tend to base our teaching on our expertise and what works well for us.
10. In faith it is one-sided and imbalanced. The emphasis is on the soul and its salvation. Never mind if the body of the member in our faith has no food or is sick, so long as his soul is positive to get to heaven. And therefore we tend to have several members of Christianity who are deep in the lowest poverty with leaders high within the abundance of goods. Who cares? This is often how God ordained it. In spirituality we tend to cannot do this. We tend to are a compassionate category of human beings. We have a tendency to care for the body similarly because the soul. We have a tendency to even look after the environment.
