Why should desire play such a great part in starting a business? Why would I, a happily married man desire more and start a business? My dear wife is THE most conscientious home-maker and home educator of our children I personally know. She graduated from a university in southern California - magna cum laud. The pattern in our home has been that once we have worked out our budget together, the check I make is deposited and she pays the bills. We have six children, two girls and four boys, in that order.
Desire, the big reason for starting a business should not exist for me, right? I am a "career musician." That simply means I had the desire and aptitude for it and I attended various schools for an inordinate number of years and became a university/college professor, voice teacher, choral conductor and church musician. I love being a musician, music-making and what it entails. BUT...as my father told me before I set out on this path...making a solid living as a musician is a difficult path. In fact, to be honest, I have held down as many as four jobs simultaneously - just with the desire to make ends meet. Do you know how burdensome-and yes, discouraging-and desire-producing it is to work like a dog and regularly have more month than money? When unexpected expenses crop up such as broken bones, surgery, car repairs...well you get the idea. Living in a state of "digging oneself out of the hole" is no fun.
So, there were years spent looking for what I could do to change our situation. When I crossed off those things I knew I could not do (or had tried and failed at doing) and considered the kinds of things I could possibly do, my path led to something I would never have otherwise ever considered: starting an online business!
You have just started a business? Do you have the commitment-producing desire to do a business?
The first step that HAS to be present when you start your own Internet-based business, or business of any kind is DESIRE. The want, the need, the reasons have to be huge - sufficient to change the course of your life. Are you there? 98% of all business start-ups fail in great measure due to losing desire.
You see, for me, getting by from month to month left me with a massive desire to be able to: plan family vacations, host an extended-family gathering at our home, provide liberally for my children, give to ministries and specific individuals in non-profit service organizations to help the poor about whom I care deeply, live without anxiety about "how to pay for" necessities, or have enough for my wife and me in our old age. So, when I wonder what I need to do to profit in business, I pull out the desire list-but mine is more complete and explicit than what I just told you-and I remind myself of all the reasons for pursuing this business.
Here is the advice. Write your desires down. Be complete. Be explicit. Post your list of desires in a prominent place where you see them every day when you get to work. A valid desire list will keep you doing what you know is necessary to achieve your goals while you are starting a business.
