The gallery, soon to find it’s home at the former Ipswich Art School, will host as their first collection, the work of six contemporary international artists from the Saatchi Gallery in London. Pieces from Jon Pylypchuk, Matthew Monahan, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Thomas Housego, Alexandra Bricken, Andy Yoder and Will Ryman will be exhibited at the Ipswich Art Gallery from Friday 9th July 2010 – Friday 31st December 2010. The Saatchi Gallery in London, established with the aim of providing an innovative forum for contemporary modern art, and prides itself on presenting work by largely unseen young artists or yet to be discovered international artists. The eclectic collection usually begins unknown, and the gallery consequentially operates as a springboard for young artists to set their feet upon the stage that is contemporary art. The planned Ipswich Art Gallery is delighted to win the support of London’s Saatchi Gallery, and with the new collection promising strong educational research in the future, and establishing the gallery and museum as a significant cultural and educational facility, there are high hopes that this will have an impact on the local and wider community.

Ipswich Art School is re-opening as a contemporary art gallery, with a "first for Ipswich" exhibition from the world renowned Saatchi Collection. This six month exhibition provides unique access to pieces of work from seven International artists - Jon Pylypchuk, Matthew Monahan, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Thomas Housego, Alexandra Bricken, Andy Yoder, Will Ryder. This exhibition comprises a mixture of multimedia pieces, from small to very large scale, that challenge their audience and stimulate visitors to expore, enjoy and experience the varied work on display. A Saatchi spokesman said: "We are happy that the former art school will once again have a strong educational reach. "We hope that the many schools that visit the Saatchi Gallery in London will be encouraged to visit the new museum in Ipswich to enable even more students to see contemporary art first-hand on a regular basis." Artist Maggi Hambling, who will exhibit work in the new gallery, said: "My beginnings were at Ipswich Art School”. "Its restoration as a place of vision would refocus attention on to the vital richness of this place and its continuing inspiration for artists." Ipswich councillor Judy Terry, arts portfolio holder, said: "This unique collaboration will establish the gallery/museum as a cultural and educational facility of great importance."

Should you wish to visit Ipswich for a couple of days, there are plenty of places to eat, drink and stay within Suffolk and East Anglia, the local tourist board can advise, but a favourite is always Milsom Hotels and Restaurants.
