Stress & Spirituality - How Spirituality Affects Stress Levels
Take a flash to shut your eyes and suppose regarding what a 'religious' person looks like. Whether or not you see them as sitting lotus-style in saffron robes or speaking emphatically from a pulpit, I might bet one factor you won't see them as is 'stressed'. Relaxed... serene... beatific. These are all adjectives we go together with the super-spiritual. However stressed? Reasonably defeats the purpose of all that spirituality, doesn't it?
I'm going to take a flash here to form the all-important distinction between religion and spirituality. Totally different people have different definitions of every, except for the purposes of this article, it is vital to be clear about what I mean by each term. A religion is a codified set of beliefs and practices shared by adherents. Spirituality, by contrast, is concerning a private's relationship with Spirit (but they could see it) and their affiliation with their own spiritual aspect. Please note that the 2 ideas will co-exist, but that faith does not should be religious, and equally, spirituality doesn't want to be religious.
In this text, I want to focus on spirituality, rather than religion. If you do follow an organised religion, be happy to apply the information to your own religious path. If not, I invite you to keep in mind the distinction between faith and spirituality as you read. This is because there is a nice deal of proof that a healthy religious belief system will each help lessen the impact a number of our stressors have on us, and cater to the implications of our stress responses. The first 0.5 of this article covers a number of the recommended reasons for this, while the second (that will appear in the following issue of Optimum Stress News) explores how we can use this link to assist with our stress management.
SUPPORT NETWORKS
Most stressors seem bigger and additional tough to house if we have a tendency to're feeling isolated and as if we have a tendency to're managing them alone. Knowing that we have a tendency to belong to and will connect with a cluster of individuals who care, and who will offer solace, strength and probably even solutions, can do abundant to offset that feeling. And interestingly enough, that sense of belonging doesn't essentially need to be to a group of people. If we see the nature as one thing we tend to can interact with, or Spirit or our Higher Selves as beings with whom we tend to can speak, then they will become half of our support just as much as actual individuals could.
PERSPECTIVE
In the thousand and one things we have a tendency to all have to try and do to keep up with the stress work, study, family, and friends; problems that would seem fairly minor if they attacked us one-by-one will seem unbearably huge. At such times, believing in something bigger than ourselves (or bigger than the day-to-day self who has to house all of those problems) will generally help to shrink our stressors back down to one thing approaching a manageable size.
MEANING
It is a exhausting thing to just accept once we're browsing robust periods, however it isn't the things that happen to us that upset us. What upsets us is the meanings we provide those events. For instance, if I've just failed employment interview, it's not really failing the interview that is upset me - it's all the things I've made it mean. Maybe, in my mind, it means that I am going to never get employment, that I am simply no good at interviews, that I'll perpetually be broke, or perhaps that I'm a useless person in all areas of my life. Whatever it may be, unless I had my heart set on that specific job, it's not like to merely be the interview results. When this happens, a sense of spirituality will facilitate me to seem for positive meanings in seemingly negative events - enabling me to raise what I will learn, or how I will grow stronger, instead of asking why it is usually me that gets dumped on.
SPACE & STILLNESS
One thing most religious systems emphasise is the requirement for time spent by ourselves in quiet and stillness. In this still area, our minds - weary of thoughts speeding around at breakneck speed - will notice rest. The time alone will be spent meditating, praying, or simply listening and appreciating what's there around and inside us in that given moment. The shape doesn't matter - no matter is right for you is what's right for you. It is the peace and respite we have a tendency to're accessing - the simple 'day out' that makes this so useful for stress management.
These are simply four of the potential suggested ways that developing a personal spirituality will facilitate to keep our stress at optimum levels. In Half two, we tend to'll look at how we tend to will begin to develop the kind of spirituality that is true to our own individual values, and the way to make use of it as a tool for managing stress. If you have got any queries or comments on the first 0.5 of the article, please do not hesitate to contact me. Otherwise, till the next issue, might every day bring you closer to your optimum life.
