Is there a separate spirituality for girls? Since I usually blog on problems of women's spirituality, I sometimes receive comments or emails from folks who object to the concept that there is something separate to mention concerning spirituality for women. They usually write one thing along the lines of 'spirituality is concerning moving past distinctions like race and gender, to a universal understanding that transcends these categorizations.'
In theory, I agree. But to the extent that non secular growth takes place among our daily lives, in the instant to moment experiences that we have, we tend to would like to take into consideration the realities of our lives, and therefore the way they typically differ from men's. And to the extent that non secular growth requires self-awareness, we want to handle the distinct gender conditioning that we tend to usually receive, especially connected to religion and spirituality.
This can be what women's spirituality is for me, but I've got return to appreciate this is often quite completely different from how several people read it. If you Google 'ladies's spirituality', a heap of the listings you will get back are connected to goddess worship, or feminine systems of divinity, often pagan or wiccan in orientation. The recognition of those traditions has exploded in recent decades, partly as a reaction against the patriarchal leadership of the world's major religions, and the role these religions have often historically played in the suppression and persecution of women.
I favor feminine symbols of divinity, however to me, discarding the globe's major religions wholesale on sexist grounds, and/or redefining God as feminine, is missing the point. Spiritual data and expertise DO transcend gender. Light isn't male or feminine, and neither is power. And mystics at intervals each major faith have described very similar experiences of divine light-weight and power. Personally, I am more interested in addressing how women will grow among no matter non secular tradition they have adopted, and how they can facilitate to vary the role of ladies at intervals those.
So in that context, what are the components of a modern girls's spirituality? I suppose it has to address those aspects of girls's lives that are still different from men's, as a result of these aspects confirm what elements of our religious paths would possibly be totally different too. For instance:
- How can we have a tendency to juggle work, family, our health, and a non secular observe? Studies show that we still do the bulk of kid-rearing and housework, no matter whether or not we work outside the house, in addition to parent and alternative caretaking, so juggling may be a notably difficult side of our lives. Several ladies place their spirituality entirely on hold until late in life. On behalf of me, finding ways that that we have a tendency to can integrate non secular practice into our days, and begin to work out our daily lives as an instrument for religious growth, are key.
- How do our bodies and our image of them impact our religious journey? Several folks tend to think about spirituality as anti-physical, but if you study the mystics in any tradition, you quickly learn nothing might be any from the truth. Our bodies are the instrument through that we expertise sacred moments. And we have a tendency to girls tend to have a difficult relationship to our bodies, continually wanting to be thinner, curvier, taller, shorter or younger. How does that block our ability to embrace our body as an instrument of our practice? How will it impact our mental and even physical health? And the way will having a feminine brain and body impact how we expertise non secular moments?
- Related to the present is, how is our energy totally different, and the way does that impact us spiritually? Several mystic traditions teach that we have a tendency to every have a non-physical energy body or energy centers through that we have a tendency to hook up with the globe additionally to our physical bodies. How are ladies's energy bodies different? How will that impact how we tend to expertise each the world and spirituality? How will our energy modification in relation to our body as we bear the various phases of our reproductive life cycle? I realize this would possibly be too new-agey for some, but I've got found that the majority girls notice this info extraordinarily valuable.
- How does gender conditioning impact our path? Specifically, what messages have we have a tendency to received about what it means that to be spiritual women, and are they empowering or disempowering? Many religions prohibit girls's access to leadership positions, and emphasize nurturing and repair as women's primary non secular roles. Whereas these will be important components of our path, an overemphasis on them can also keep us from pursuing contemplative practices and our full spiritual power. If you believe in enlightenment or full non secular liberation (as I do), then these practices are an essential half of deepening our spiritual connection.
Looking at girls's spirituality from this new perspective, one that doesn't marginalize or glorify women at intervals religion however instead addresses their distinct lives and wants, is of value to nearly any spiritual seeker.
