On reading Susan Cato's Time Magazine Canada piece titled, "In Search of the Non secular," I became increasingly annoyed at the realization that many people keep creating the erroneous split between religion and spirituality, after they are one and the same. For example, in the Time Canada piece, Rabbi Leigh Lerner, who leads the Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, a Reform congregation in Montreal, states, "Religiosity could not be increasing, but spirituality is," confirming the notion that 'spirituality is separate and preferable to religion.'
I would have to disagree with this notion. Why do individuals keep insisting that the ritual and setting of worship is religion? It clearly is not. Religion comes from the Latin root re-ligare which means that to re-connect. Re-connect with what? To re-connect with the inner Hero, the Divine, the
Sacred. It's the final Grail Quest, the hero's journey, the non secular journey, that we tend to are all on: the Quest for Truth. Ask any Christian with a real understanding of the teachings of Christ about 'going to church' and that they will tell you that the church, the physical church where individuals attend sing hymns and hear sermons, is NOT the real Church. The important Church is the spiritual body of Christ where people fellowship in love. And where ritual is anxious, it clearly states in the Bible, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, however faith working through love" (Galatians 5:4, NASB).
Faith may be a window unto the unseen and is predicated on the years of religious experience of nice lecturers, prophets, and seers. It's not some ancient relic, like an old fashion or fad, to be thrown away under the guise of a brand new word like spirituality. It is a metaphor forever based on eternal principles.
Along a similar vein, I fully disagree with Cato's last statement in her article that "During a skeptical age, faith can't be taken on faith." I'd argue the exact opposite: religion can ONLY be taken on faith. Religion is the cornerstone, the foundation, of all faith and spirituality. Religion is the ability to determine the unseen; an entire and total surrendering to the majesty of truth. It's nothing to try to to with believing or not believing, and everything to try and do with knowing and experiencing for oneself. One can question and obtain all they wish, and along the method a number of their queries will be answered, but ultimately one must take the great leap of faith in order to expertise transformation, because there can continuously be a lot of queries than answers.
I feel the confusion between faith and spirituality is causing a backlash against each the new agey mumbo jumbo of pop spirituality or 'spirituality lite' and the rules, rituals, and restrictions found among traditional establishments that claim to accommodate religion and a move towards a a lot of authentic, plain, honest, and sometimes blunt means of communicating faith and spirituality. I recently took a screen writing course with the legendary Robert Mckee who was talking concerning looking out for the truth by exploring each the sunshine and therefore the darkness, the dual nature in all things (what I decision the psychology of the hero and the psychology of the villain in my book). He was talking regarding what appears pretty also sometimes has an ugly side and mentioned that the beautiful bird songs we have a tendency to hear are concerning some bird staking out its territory and letting all the other birds within the vicinity know to not dare invade his 'turf.' And all the other birds are simply waiting to hear his song weaken and falter with age thus they will "peck the mother f*cker to death." To me, that was a non secular statement, as a result of it was the truth.
There is visiting be a move faraway from the crystals, s?ances, incarnations, mantras, affirmations, and additionally a move far from church hymns and sermons towards a research for truth that involves a very authentic, plain, and direct approach of communicating that can not tolerate any bullshit. We will see this already with the popularity, particularly among youth, of Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine," and "Farenheit 911" the 'religion' of these days's generation.
A blunt and darker expression of truth is underway as people learn to not shun the shit behind the sunshine. Enter a new era: a journey into the center of darkness.
