What's a 'scanner'?
A scanner could be a child or adult:
* who has many interests
* who excels at many totally different things
* who will modification topics mid-sentence and blast off on tangents, which to them are connected [though others may not see the links]
Wanting back, I can see this was a pattern for me as way back as I can recall.
I was a passionate reader and read all sorts of materials as well as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs and many daily NYC newspapers.
I got lost in dictionaries and encyclopedias - finding a word or concept and then going to the synonyms and related ideas, etc. [And till I learned the art of bookmarking, my initial months on the Internet led me to try to to the identical factor on my laptop and I never got in to where I started - losing all the sites I found along the path.]
As a child, I was known as a jack-of-all-trades; nastily followed with "master-of-none" by a shut relative. In my now older head I do remember that young me thinking "NO - I HAVE mastered them - but moved on."
And thus I went through life trying different professions, collecting a few degrees, and typically wondering what was "wrong" with me that I simply moved from interest to interest.
Then, at the age of 69, a disciple told me I was in all probability a scanner. I had never heard the word as an outline of children or adults - and so in scanner fashion, I started reading concerning scanners!
I had a major AHA moment when I said, "I AM A SCANNER." It was as if a great weight had been off from my brain. I knew then that everything I had been doing was me being me and this was my manner of probing life. And - a lot of importantly - I was fine and this brain of mine was OK - totally different from others but OK.
Does any of this describe your kid or your kids? Or maybe you?
It could be that you simply and/or your child is a scanner - however you'll have been told your kid has some type of attention downside and desires to be medicated. Too several professionals are too quick to label and then prescribe medication for something that looks and acts totally different from "average."
Rather than worrying that your child has so many interests, encourage those interests. Libraries, the Web and once school activities will enable your scanner kid to scan, learn and strive on totally different hats. Enjoy this with your child.
And if your neighbors, in-laws, your own parents or maybe the lecturers tell you that your kid should learn to target one task - smile and say thank you.
And advice yourself - I'm a nice parent and my kid may be a scanner.
Aren't we have a tendency to lucky!
