Over the years there have been many leadership and business books that have stood out and made an effect on my terribly own philosophies. With the transformation of how we tend to do business that's underway due to the expansion of social media, I have been wondering whether or not the philosophies or strategies promoted by these books have been impacted in any way.
Though it was concerning fifteen years ago that I read this, one such book was Lincoln on Leadership by Donald T Phillips. There have been two concepts in specific that I took from this book. The first is the philosophy that you must get into the trenches together with your team and perceive what's happening at each level. The second is the philosophy of surrounding yourself with thought leaders with whom you can discuss ideas and strategies. There are many different keys to leadership included within the book, and upon recently revisiting the book I discovered great ones that I didn't even keep in mind, but today I'm going to concentrate on those two that resonated with me.
One amongst the items that social media and Twitter give us access to are the thoughts and readings of some of these days's business leaders. We tend to can follow anyone on Twitter, and several of today's leaders are on Twitter, posting their latest readings and thoughts for all of us to view. We will also see who they are following and learn a little regarding their interests though we could not know why. It is not the same as being able to sit down down with them one-on-one, but offers us some insight and access that we tend to could never have had within the past.
Though it's not precisely getting into the trenches with their team, leaders will currently get a higher idea of what each employees and customers are thinking and saying about them. Social networking platforms have given us unprecedented access to thoughts, opinions and folks who previously would have been inaccessible to us. Will the access give us the identical info and understanding that we tend to would get through personally interaction? I suppose there are trade offs. We tend to get more info however may miss nuances and emotions that you will pick up on in person. There's a ton of clutter to get through to obtain the data that you're wanting for. The a lot of familiar we tend to become with the technologies and conjointly the more platforms are designed to help us manage this info, the more efficiencies we tend to can see.
There are a range of nice business books out there that were written previous to the advent of social media and it would be an interesting study to revisit some of those books and determine how social media will be applied or provides us with additional tools to achieve those philosophies.
