Currently that the vacation season is over, it's back to work! If the thought of meeting new people at a business event sends a chill up your spine, you are not alone. For several of us networking is something we dread. Unfortunately, these days, it's not what you know. It's who you recognize or who knows you, that really counts for business success. And although tradeshows and business mixers can be intimidating for anyone, they are also the right opportunity to network and build business relationships. To feel more at ease at your next event, prepare ahead of time, with full stomach, the correct angle and the right tools.
The buffet line-up can be a great place to strike up a conversation. Spending all some time there will not create the most effective impression.
Food is best saved for thought, not conversation. Juggling food and drink will gift challenges when meeting individuals, shaking hands or while attempting to hold on a conversation.
When holding a drink, use your left hand. This will keep your right hand dry and accessible for shaking hands with others.
Barbeques and ball games are in a very league of their own and my warrant drinking out of cans and bottles. But for most events glasses over bottles are the preferred choice.
Do not forget your networking tools! Bring business cards, brochures or profiles and wear a nametag.
Name tags ought to be worn in line of vision. This means on the proper, shut to the shoulder. Once you extend your right arm to shake hands, the attention is automatically drawn to that area.
Feeling lonely? Approach folks standing on their own, teams of three or larger groups. When approaching a group of 2 you will be interrupting a private conversation and it may become awkward or uncomfortable.
If you're sitting when someone approaches you, show respect and interest by standing and greeting.
To fulfill and greet; create eye contact, smile, shake hands and say hello. Introduce yourself together with your first and last name and, if appropriate, state your relationship to the host.
Don't use nick-names. Hear how individuals introduce themselves and follow their lead. Ask permission before shortening a reputation or making an attempt out a nickname, simply in case it isn't appreciated. Nick-names like sweetie and honey are never applicable during a business setting.
Avoid taboo topics like politics, faith, sex or money. In alternative words, stay faraway from anything personal or controversial.
Ease up on the sales pressure. Instead show interest with queries, little talk and lightweight conversation. Current events build great conversation when kept non-controversial.
Offer and receive business cards respectfully. When a business card is obtainable to you, hold it respectfully and examine it before putting it away. When providing your business card, gift it thus it can be browse, with the printing facing the person receiving the card. Continually wait to be asked, before presenting your business card.
With a very little effort and self management, business events will be a quick, fun method to build your business network.
