For several of us networking is something we dread. Unfortunately, these days, it's not what you know. It's who you recognize or who knows you, that really counts for business success. And although tradeshows and business mixers can be intimidating for anyone, they are also the right opportunity to network and build business relationships. To feel more at ease at your next event, prepare ahead of time, with full stomach, the correct angle and the right tools.
The buffet line-up can be a great place to strike up a conversation. Spending all some time there will not create the most effective impression.
Food is best saved for thought, not conversation. Juggling food and drink will gift challenges when meeting individuals, shaking hands or while attempting to hold on a conversation.
When holding a drink, use your left hand. This will keep your right hand dry and accessible for shaking hands with others.
Barbeques and ball games are in a very league of their own and my warrant drinking out of cans and bottles. But for most events glasses over bottles are the preferred choice.
Do not forget your networking tools! Bring business cards, brochures or profiles and wear a nametag.
