Making a recipe book for your kids is a fun and rewarding experience for all concerned. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you get started on this project.
Gather and Organize:
Once you ve decided to put together a cookbook for your kids, the first thing you will want to do is, of course, start to gather together all the recipes that you want to use. Some things to consider while you are doing this are: do you want the cookbook to include recipes that the kid can make on his or her own, or with a minimum of adult supervision? For instance, do you want to include mostly dishes that do not include the use of heat and knives? One good idea might be to make the book include a little bit of everything. At the beginning of the book you can have recipes that your child is capable of flying solo on, and as the book progresses, you can incorporate more and more recipes that are more complex and even include some items that are traditional family dishes that have been handed down through the generations.
Making a cookbook that contains recipes that can progress along with the child s skills, and even push them along just little bit is a great way to help ensure that the book will be a part of the child s life for a long time to come, and perhaps even be something that can be passed along to his or her own kids someday.
There are a few different ways to organize the book, of course. You can, for instance, divide the chapters by dish types (desserts, snacks and appetizers, etc.), and each section can progress from the simpler items to the more difficult. You can also simply divide the book into sections by age and skill level.
Of course, if you are creating this book for your child, you will want to have his or her input as you put the recipes together. If she has a favorite dish or two of yours that she wants to be able to make herself someday, for instance, she can make sure that they are included.
Layout:
You should be able to produce your pages in your computer s word processing program (if you don t have one, OpenOffice is free and downloadable). You should have one recipe per page, and also include a title page and a table of contents so you and your child can find the recipes you are looking for quickly and easily.
As far as a cover and title, it might be fun to have the child help name the book and to do a drawing for the cover page. This is optional of course, as you want the book to be something that will stand the test of time.
Printing and Binding:
Print up your pages and start to put some thought into how you want to bind the cookbook. You have several options in this case, ranging from a simple three ring binder to a hardcover book. One great option might be to create a spiral coil bound book. These are very durable and functional books that can stand up to some rough handling and can be used and read in a hands free fashion that is very useful for cooking. Whichever method you choose, the machines to bind these type of books are inexpensive, super easy to use, and can assist you with many other projects as well.
